Meredith Nickie: Deploy Black

Sept. 16 – Oct. 30, 2010
Artspace, New Haven, CT

In her sculptural installations and architectural interventions, Meredith Nickie addresses notions of power and class through metonym and metaphor. Deploy Black is a new series of works that explore scenes of subjugation. Nickie uses familiar objects and spaces, yet charges them with disturbing emotional content. Works titled after anthems of protest, “Strange Fruit” and “Waltzing Matilda,” allude to the lynched and the drowned figure (respectively) through entangled forms of race and class struggle where the marked body is laid bare. Conflating absence and presence, Nickie’s static yet disruptive work speaks to our silent complicity in the destruction of others.
